What is Imposter Word?
Imposter Word is a social deduction word game where everyone gets secret information — except the Imposters.
Most players receive the secret word. The Imposters receive a hint instead. Everyone then discusses the word, tries to identify the Imposters, and votes to eliminate them.
The Goal
🟢 Crew: Find the Imposters
Work together to identify and eliminate every Imposter before they take control of the game.
🔴 Imposter: Blend In
Use your hint and the discussion to figure out the secret word while convincing everyone that you're Crew.
How a Round Works
Game Setup
Choose your game mode (how many Imposters), category, and difficulty.
Players
Enter the names of everyone playing.
Secret Reveal
Players privately view their secret information one at a time.
Pass the Phone
Pass the phone to the next player without revealing your secret.
Discussion
Everyone discusses the possible word and looks for suspicious behavior.
Voting
Vote for the player you think is an Imposter.
Elimination
The most-voted player is eliminated and their role is revealed.
Results
The round continues if the game isn't decided yet, or reveals the final outcome.
If You're Crew
You will see the actual secret word.
Your secret word
PIZZA
- Remember the word.
- Don't show it to anyone.
- Give useful but not overly obvious clues during discussion.
- Pay attention to players who seem confused or suspicious.
- Work together with the other Crew players.
If You're the Imposter
You will NOT see the secret word. Instead, you'll receive a hint.
Hint
A popular Italian dish often topped with cheese and tomato sauce.
- Read your hint carefully.
- Try to work out the secret word.
- Listen carefully to what other players say.
- Give answers that fit the discussion without being too specific.
- Avoid drawing attention to yourself.
- Try to identify the secret word before you're eliminated.
Pass the Phone
Players take turns viewing their secret information. After you've seen your information, pass the phone to the next player without showing your screen.
Don't look at another player's secret. Don't let other players see your screen — this matters most because everyone shares one phone.
Discussion
Once everyone has seen their secret information, the discussion begins. Put the phone down — everyone talks it through out loud, in player order, then discusses freely.
- Talk about the word indirectly.
- Give clues.
- Listen to everyone's answers.
- Look for players whose answers don't fit.
- Watch for players who seem to be fishing for information.
Don't say the secret word directly — the discussion is where clues get traded, not where the word gets given away.
Voting
When discussion ends, everyone votes for the player they believe is an Imposter — privately, one at a time, passing the phone between voters just like the Secret Reveal. You can't vote for yourself or for a player who's already been eliminated.
Choose carefully. Eliminating a Crew player helps the Imposters.
If it's a tie: no one is eliminated that round, and the game moves back into discussion for another vote among the same players.
Elimination
The player with the most votes is eliminated, and their role is revealed to everyone — either Imposter Caught or Wrong Player. Eliminated players sit out the rest of the round.
If the game isn't decided yet, everyone heads back into discussion for another round of clues and voting among whoever's left. If it is decided, the game moves straight to the final results.
Playing With Multiple Imposters
Depending on the selected game mode, a round can have 1, 2, or 3 Imposters. With 3 Imposters, three players receive hints instead of the secret word.
For example: 10 players with Triple Threat mode means 7 Crew and 3 Imposters.
Imposters don't know who the other Imposters are — everyone has to work it out from the discussion, same as the Crew.
How to Win
🟢 Crew Wins
Every Imposter has been eliminated.
🔴 Imposters Win
The surviving Imposters equal or outnumber the surviving Crew.
Play Offline
Imposter Word is designed to keep working without an internet connection.
When you're online, AI can generate new words and hints. When you're offline, the game uses a local word collection instead — either way, your game keeps going.
